I am Mary Hughes the owner and lead consultant at Hughes Legal Nurse Consulting, LLC
My nursing career began at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York, NY, where I worked in a variety of settings including in-patient, out-patient infusion center, out-patient surgical suite, critical care, urgent care, post anesthesia care and palliative care. Clinical roles I performed include clinical nurse, charge nurse, triage nurse, infusion nurse, office practice, patient educator, and staffing and scheduling coordinator. After 16 years at MSKCC I transitioned to my current position as an infusion nurse at Rutger’s Cancer Institute of New Jersey, (CINJ) in New Brunswick, NJ, where I continue to enjoy the clinical aspects of pediatric nursing, and educating patients and families in the out-patient setting.
During my career I have consistently led teams of various subject matter experts through health care scenarios both in nursing clinical practice and in consulting roles with legal teams. As a legal consultant my role transitions smoothly to review medical records providing critical insight on standards of care and causation, complication versus negligence, as well as identifying case critical pre-existing conditions and patient recovery that can positively or negatively affect the outcome.
I earned my Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) from The University of Scranton, PA. I hold certifications in Legal Nurse Consulting (CLNC), Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Nursing (CPHON), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Administration.
On the personal side, I live in New Jersey and I am a mother of three boys. I enjoy spending time with them in a variety of very active ways – bike riding, swimming, organized sports, and laughter till our bellies hurt.
